Short Essay 35: The Fulani Will Not Leave

Short Essay 35
By Dr. Aliyu U. Tilde

The Fulani Will Not Leave

The stage is set for committing a major war crime in Nigeria. The Special Task Force (STF) in Jos under the command of Maj-General Henry Ayoola yesterday issued an order of evacuation within 48 hrs to a number of Fulani dominated towns in Barikin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas for a military operation that will commence there, otherwise, their lives cannot be guaranteed. The STF statement read:

RESTRICTED

1. This is to inform the people residing in Barikin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas that a military operation is ongoing in the area. The inhabitants of Mahanga, Kakuruk, Kuzen, Maseh and Shong 2 are to evacuate immediately with their property within the next 48hrs.
2. Meanwhile, residents of Kura Falls, Kuzuk and Sharuk Rim of Gashish and Bachit districts respectively are enjoined not to panic and to be careful of their movement within the area and avoid places of military operation until further notice. People are enjoined to report any suspicious movement and activities in their areas.

3.You are please requested to use your medium to disseminate this information to the general pubic. It is to be announced routinely throughout the period of the operation in order to avoid any hazard to human lives and property.

The allusions I made in my last Friday article are becoming real: the STF is playing the bid of the Plateau State Government to cleanse Berom-dominated local government areas of Jos-South, Barikin Ladi and Riyom of Fulani, as they did with the Hausa. The allegation that Ayoola is a puppet of Governor Jang now seems more probable than ever before. But that is not the catch.

The catch is this: The Fulani have vowed not to move an inch from their homes. Those I contacted have told me that they have sworn to stay put, come what may. Their argument is simple: There has never been in the history of any democracy, no matter how lousy it is, that people in so many towns would be driven out of their homes without any order from a court of competent jurisdiction or any arrangement made for their relocation but by just an order in the name of military operation, as if they are boarding students that are sent home when their school is shut down after a riot. You cannot do that to whole families, much less to whole towns. It is a war crime under International law.

Therefore, pertinent questions to ask on this matter are: Where do the Fulani go? What alternative have you given them? Are the Fulani – with their entire family, property and cows – just a collection of sheep that can be driven away at will in accordance with the whim of someone, devoid of any right? Why would a government that claims it is desirous of peace side with one of the two warring factions and fight the other? What has happened to Berom militia that have been committing war crimes against Hausa and the Fulani in the area for eleven years now? Has the Nigerian government arrested them or destroyed any of their homes? Has it issued an evacuation order for the residents of Haipang and Riyom that continuously kill defenceless Nigerian citizens travelling on the highways that pass through their towns? Why only the Fulani? Why?

The military is increasingly proving itself incompetent in handling matters of internal security in this country. It has emasculated the police that is the only institution with the constitutional mandate to do so and taken over its role. Since the late 1970s, the military has opposed modernization of the police through upgrading it with modern technology and new approaches of keeping internal security. The police today remain sidelined in the scheme of internal security. Everybody calling the shots in this domain of theirs is a soldier, who is trained best to defend our borders and contribute to UN peacekeeping missions. Major-Henry Ayoola and his colonels field commanders that are set to massacre Nigerians should be sent to Mali to face al-Qaeda to prove that they deserve their ranks.

Also, Ayoola in his short tenure as the STF commandant has shown sufficient partiality to warrant his redeployment. Fulani on the Plateau are bonafide Nigerians, not its enemies that deserve the bullets and tanks of the Nigerian military establishment. Ayoola must go.

It is gladdening to note that it is not totally dark. A number of human rights groups have risen in solidarity with these poor souls. A number of media houses, particularly the foreign ones, have also in the past 12 hours played their role of informing the world of the pending massacre. Their cameras are set on the scene.

The Sultan – who is the leader of the Fulani in Nigeria – and other elders have also waded in. The result of their intervention before the ultimate authorities in the land is expected to be positive. He should be allowed to remain a leader, and not to metamorphose into their commander.

The irony here is that the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, is a not only a Fulani but, like the Sultan, a direct descendant of Danfodio, the quintessential Danfodio that fought for justice and got it in 19th Century Hausaland. How could these injustices be perpetrated just two weeks after he visited Jos and assured the world that he will do his possible best to bring peace? Is driving the Fulani from their homes a means of bringing about peace? He should rise to this threat which, as I said, will prove to be worse than that of Boko Haram. If he is away, he should return to the country. His office is on fire.

But just in case Ayoola and his troops are recalcitrant and they go ahead with their intended war crime against all appeals, they should prepare their hands for the ultimate responsibility of any civilian life lost in their so-called ‘operation’. If the Nigerian authorities would continue to remain partial and indifferent on the matter until the massacre is committed, the International Criminal Court is there, watching and waiting. One day, Ayoola, Jang, the Chief of Defence Staff and Jonathan – who is away and apparently was not even consulted on the eviction exercise – will only have themselves to blame.

I support the decision that the Fulani stay put and prefer to die gallantly than to flee in the face of an army that cannot even contain the insurgency of Boko Haram. I support it 100%. To die by the sword in defence of your right is better than to live in humiliation of subservience to any mortal. This is a doctrine written in their genes. I have no doubt that they will prove me right.

Allah ballu ummatore Fulbe!

Dr. Tilde, you are a prolific and excellent writer and I respect you for that. Your opinion on the Fulanis to stay is also commendable. It will be gross misconduct on the part of the military to evacuate the Fulanis.

However, I have a problem with you Dr. You are bias. I read your articles in Sahara Reporters and other Newspapers; you are often guided by prejudice in your summision.

On the 7th of July, 2012; more than 30 persons were reportedly murdered in cold blood as their assailants never give em the faintest chance to defend emselves. The following day, the same murderers stormed the burial ground and desecrated a burial rites by gunning down anyone on sight including a Senator and a rep member. All these atrocities were reportedly perpetrated by your so-called Fulani herdsmen you seriously wish to preserve around that vicinity to continue in their cowardly and senseless massacre of innocent women and children and thus polluting the sanctity of Islam and Muslims before the whole world.

In one of your earlier write ups on bokoharam insurgents and how they started, you opined that possession of arms is not only illegal but a panacea for a very very long and bloody unrest and should not be allowed of any person or group of persons.

Today Fulanis use guns and the government is aware of their numerous atrocities and yet you want the government to fold her arms against a bunch of unscrupulous murderers.

For the records, I lived with Fulanis somewhere around my childhood and those Fulanis back then were hospitable, nice and friendly not this sort that attacked and kill women and babies.

@CGC Makera. U said it yourself u lived with the Fulani's in peace. So what happened to turn them on a killing rampage! I say there is more to it that meets the eye!
It is unfortunate that Nigerians don't have the habit of finding out things. I assure you, you will be surprise at the result of such findings if ever they take place.

@ the anonymous above, who is trying to insinuate that Dr Tilde is crying wolf while it is his silence and that of his likes that led to the present situation,
What do you know about the genesis of this Problems?
where were you when a planned massacre was carried out against the Hausa Fulani in that vicinity?
where were you when their properties, Cows, lives are left by the Government to the mercy of the Berom Hoodlums?
is it an offence to defend oneself when the government is not willing to defend you?
do you expect them to fold their arms watch these Murderers killing them and stealing their properties when ever they wish to do so?
pls lets face the reality, it is the government that fail to carry out its duty, if from the beginning it did not allow the beroms to attack the innocent Hausa-Fulani Muslims, and take away there properties nothing of kind would have happen. so to pour the blame on Dr and his likes is a great injustice from your side. pls note and take care.

Mahanga, Kakuruk, Kuzen, Maseh and Shong 2 are clearly all Berom names! It is the Beroms that are being sent out of their land.......Aliyu Tilde is just a mischief maker and is in cahoots with the mercenaries that have been wiping out Berom people from their land.

I am disappointed in your unfortunate subjective views, any man that has the audacity to kill another man and his family should not be allowed to live. U know very well that the so-called fulanis are the murderers whose hands bear the blood of innocent lives, how do u react to this fact? should they be left there to continue to kill? I blame the berom who have not yet unleased rapid reprisal attacks on these communities!

Dr. Aliyu U. Tilde said...

Thank you all for your comments.

I have deleted some abusive ones though.

I think I need to write a short piece on how several peace talks initiated by the Fulani were turned down by Berom leaders, just for the information of my readers. I was central to the biggest one which took place in 2010. It convened after Dogo Nahauwa under the auspices of the offices of the NSA, the Sultan and the Gbong Gwom.

I still believe peace is the answer. Now that the Berom have seen that they cannot win the war, perhaps, they may be ready to embrace peace. That is if the cleansing agenda is abandoned. How can the Berom negotiate with people that are not Nigerians, asked their paramount Emperor, Jang. Imagine.

Some readers are accusing me of prejudice. I know too much about this conflict to sit on the fence. My inconsequential pen is a voice for the weak. The Nigerian press is there for the strong and the sacred - Jang, his money and his people. I am not cut for the ambivalence of the Nigerian elite when my people are undergoing genocide. I am sorry.

Alhamdulillah! Thnk u Dr Tilde... Allah SWT said in d Glorious Qur'an: ATA NASRULLAHI FALA TASTA'AJILUU.......(AID FROM GOD HAS CAME SO DONT BE IN A HASTE). Hausa people used to say: Ganga idan ta fiye zaqi..,toh ta kusan fashewa. Now that the Beroms with the help of the state Govt, alongside the STF are putting evry available pressure within their power, to see that they ve cleansed evry Beroms
Dominated areas from Fulanis after finishing with the Hausas,it is a clear interpretation of my above quoted words because, insha'Allah the Almighty will not let true believers down. Now that they are mounting more pressure.. Their end has came. And i am greatly in the support of the fulanis not to move an inch, the should stay back and never evacuate their legitimate home no matter what it ll cause them. I am also urging all muslim ummah wherever they are to include these fellow brothers nd sisters of ours in their du'a,and also to the muslims of jos, entire plateau nd the Nation in general. Ones again thank you Dr Tilde, God bless you and the entire Muslim Umma.

Allah rene, I feel you. The disintegration agenda being pursued is becoming real.

Mine is just a piece of advice: unfortunately barkama we are lead by Bilki'en with no vision and direction. But that wouldn’t stop us from saying what would benefit the common masses who at the end will be the ones to pay dearly for the price of impending war/disintegration.

1. Two wrongs never make a right – they say: forget about George Bush empty policy of arrogance of “don’t negotiate with terrorist”. Contextualize your situation very well face your people and tell them the Truth. If you read Bushes book you will learn about his REGRET and when you ask NETO leaders and Obama about the War in Afghanistan they will tell you how much it cost them in terms of lives and Money. I don’t think you have the money US spent on War in Afghanistan, keep aside those they spent in IRAQ. Nigerian hasn’t GOT the US/NATO army might but ask them IF THEY HAVE WON THE WAR ON TERRO they are fighting. ASK them about their plan B (Nogotiation). If there is any lesson we can learn from WAR on Muslims disguise as WAR on Terror is this is: ARROGANCY doesn’t PAY. Be wise BE HUMBLE and call the FULANIS and APPOLOGISE to them for what the Governor Jang sponsored/supported TERRORIST (at least in the side of all MUSLIMS) for the TERROR they have been UNLEASHING on HAUSAS/FULANIS and TRAVELLERS passing through their villages. DON’T lie to yourself again to FALSELY THINK that because you bribed and prevented the MEDIA from REPORTING THOSE ATROCITIES unleashed on MUSLIMS/FULANIS/HAUSAS for YEARS. DON’T Forget the Fulanis/Hausas have their records and they CANT BE WRONG with that. BE WISE, BE NICE, JANG/JONATHAN you are already AGED try an LEAVE a LEGACY that you people MAY live and remember YOU by SAVING their live THROUGH STOPPING further KILLINGS of the FULANIS/HAUSAS. For the more you kill the more your people are kill

continue....

conti,,,,
2. It is a piety for a leader to not only LIE to the WORLD, but LIE to his OWN CONCIOUS. Jang/Jonah everyone knows the outcome of your failed mission – violence SHALL only BEGAT more VIOLENCE until all YOUR people are finished. GUYS WHERE is you basic PHYSCOLOGY lessons? WHERE is YOUR COMMON SENSES? Are you an embecel are your HEADS NUCKLED? You want to extinct your own people so that your CHILDREN STAYING ABROAD can one day come back to rule the empty land in plateau?? Jang your people Have no any other HOME or concentration order than in plateau. BUT the Fulanis and their MBororo Warriors, the Hausas are all over Africa. For the Fulanis/MBORORO is just a matter of Nyelugo and the whole Jos will be exterminated. Forget about those Military who cannot even tame BK and partying with them to GET FAT Security Budgets.

3. For those who don’t know who the Fulanis are: open your eyes and mind to digest the following: There are 3 types of Fulanis: the educated ones like Dr Tilde, Jibril Aminu, Ahmed Joda, Bamanga Tukur and the likes. And then comes the Shepherd Muslim Fulani in and around cities and town all over Africa grazing their cattles and living a normal live. The 3rd kinds of Fulanis are also cattle/sheep/goat rearers that are far far from towns and cities. They are less religious in the orthodox sense, their main religion like the YUROBAS and IGBOS is their Tribes and Wealth (respectively??) it seems I am running out of grammar….. They are known as THE MBOROROS. They are all over Africa they are peaceful people…..BUT when you touch them or any of the two brethren groups mentioned above, they will retaliate gallantly and with ferocity and NO MATTER HOW LONG it will take them BUT they will RETALIATE. If you kill one of their COW the recompense is 10 of your people. If you kill 1 of them the recompense is 100 of your people. If you burn one house of theirs, they will burn ten more of your. MBOROROS as I said they are peaceful … you only need to perk their eyes to see The OTHER UGLIEST SIDE of them. What happened last week will just be a child play.

4. Is up to you really to decide Jang/Jonathan (JJs) save the lives of Plateu indigence via genuine dialogue with Fulanis “settlers” and the Hausas “settlers” and draw the ears of those Jang sponsored/Supported Terrorist to swallow their arrogance and pride inspired by BURKUTU and GOGORO. Let them stop what will wipe them off the face of their lands.

A stitch in time saves nine – they say. Be wise JJs.Know what you are fighting,,,,

Dr. Tilde,

With all due respect. You have being a voice of conflict instigation in Plateau State and that is not a good thing. If you feel that the manner of approach to the relocation of the villagers is faulty surely a better thing to do especially for an educatted person as yourself is to find a way to propose a better solution to the STF on the approach to take in regards the relocation. Unless you are against the effort to find and bring to Justice those behind these killings in Plateau State. I would have thought that you would encourage your kins men (the Fulani) to cooperate with the STF for the benefit of all in the State.

Your article instigates hatred and encourages violence. That is not what we need in Plateau State right now.

Dr. Tilde, you have really distiguished yourself as an excellent defender of the silent millions and seeminlgy defenceless fulanis across this entity called Nigeria. the most perplexing aspect of this nonesense is the active role the Military are playing in surpressing innocent souls in the name of security in the core North. I am not an alarmist, neither a religious extremist, but a true believer of federalism being championed by Northern NIgeria and its people; believe it or NOT. However, events happening around us indicated a growing apprehension and hatred on anyone who is not a southerner and a christian in this Country! This is undisputable fact. For any Military coordinator to sack inhabitants of an area that have live and stayed there from time immemorial for myopic and selfish reasons, is absurd and a call to anarchy. The Fulanis have every right to dwell anywhere in this Country, talkless of their ancestral homes. If the Governor of Plateau State is tired of living with Fulanis aor want them to vacate the place for his kinsmen, the Beroms, then he should first ordered for repatriation of all Beroms who have found solace and comfort in our midst throughout the Northern Nigeria, especially the CORE NORTH. He should know that Jos is not and has never been the Home of the Beroms in the history of the coal city. On a final words, i strongly reccommend for a serious re-think on the federating units that constituted the entity that binds this country together. It is high time we call a sapde a spade. If we cannot continue to co-exist as one indivisible entity, then we should break up so that every federating unit could stand up on its own!

This is to clear some of the misconceptions posted here about ISLAM and the Muslims:

You may also refer to my earlier comments on the types/levels of Fulani tribe. In the same regards, also refer to the notes posted in here - attributed to Sir Lord Luggard on the Fulani tribe.

Yes ISLAM is a religion of peace. It also preaches forgiveness, mercies etc. What people failed to understand is: ISLAM is not a new religion that started with Muhammad (peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) and Muslims as his followers.
On the contrary, ISLAM that has been a religion of total submission to God's will. And those who submit their will to conform to that of God Almighty are called MUSLIMS. In this sense, we say all the previous prophets/messengers of God Almighty that walk this Earth (from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ismael, Isaac, David, Solomon, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Jesus Christ the son of marry and to Muhammad the last and final messenger) they all practice a religion of total submission to God's Will -- ISLAM. And by qualification they are MUSLIMS – those who submit their will to God Almighty. They all obeyed God's command – And NOT the auto suggested instructions of Zionism or Saint Paul or any other mortal soul. GET THIS CLEARLY – help yourself and research more – with an open mind

Therefore ISLAM is a religion of the one True God Almighty and throughout history it has Never and will NEVER EVER accept OPPRESION or SUBJUGATION or HUMILIATION from any quarter. This is Allah’s world and land and it belongs to his servants. Falillahi Izzatu Wali Rasulihi Walil Mu'minuna" meaning "To ALLAH (GOD Almighty be glory/dignity/honour and then to the PROPHET and then to the BELIEVERs following the Prophet).

Having said that I must also state that No right thinking Muslims would support killings of innocent souls especially women and children of any tribe or religion. But the question to ask here is: WHO IS RESPONSIBLE for this these senseless killings? Who initiated it, who are the supporters of these killers.

Answers: Leaders are responsible.

And who are the leaders? Any answers????? Jay Jay – rights.

The ignorant fulanis of course would checkmate their ignorant Berooms or whatever you call them. Jonah and Jonathan are the tyrants and they are responsible NOT ISLAM or the Muslims.
