Makarfi, PDP and 2019

The Supreme Court has sealed the leadership dispute in the opposition PDP by passing a ruling in favour of Makarfi, whose wing is considered the bona fide. Senator Madu Sherif is seen largely as a Trojan horse sent by the ruling APC to decimate the PDP and prevent it from resurgence. It is strongly alleged that he played the same role for the PDP in the defunct ANPP.
The ruling of the apex court will send jitters into the spine of the ruling APC, which is already suffering so much at the opinion polls for failure to fulfill its campaign promises, general underperformance in governance and the fear that President Buhari, its political lifeline, may not be well enough to contest in 2019.
If Buhari does not contest and APC makes the same PDP mistake of keeping Jonathan in 2011 after Yar’adua died halfway into his tenure, the party has opened a very big gate for invasion and occupation of Aso Villa by PDP in 2019.
In that case, only God’s intervention will prevent PDP from winning the next election if they forward the right candidate. The arithmetic is too simple even to make here. But it will surely be a subject of much political discourse and maneuvers until 2019. We will continue to revisit it again and again.
Can Makarfi play the historic role of defeating the APC just after so brief a tenure? Can he give them a good run for their money? And rigging is becoming increasingly difficult. Na wa.
We are onlookers.
